How do I use a jjimjilbang in Seoul, step by step?

What happens from the front desk to the locker?
Most places follow the same order, according to our guide:
- Pay at the front desk on the way in. Many places take payment for entry there and put everything else on your locker key.
- Take the locker key. If you bought the jjimjilbang part rather than the bath only, you also get a set of clothes for the shared floor. The key is usually worn on your wrist or ankle.
- Go to the men's or women's side. Shoes usually come off first and go in a small shoe locker. Your clothes go in the main locker.
- Bathe naked on that side. The bath is separated by gender.
- Put on the clothes you were given and go to the shared sauna floor, where men and women are together and everyone is dressed.
The shared floor has heated rooms at different temperatures, mats and a snack counter. It often has massage chairs and sometimes a sleeping area. The guide suggests starting with a cooler room and working up, rather than going straight into the hottest one.
When you leave, snacks, massage chairs and similar extras are usually charged to your key. You hand the key back at the desk and pay the balance. Some places price entry by the number of hours, so ask at the desk whether there is a time limit.

What do I wear, and where are the towels?
A jjimjilbang has two dress codes in one building. On the bath side you bathe naked. On the shared sauna floor everyone wears the clothes the front desk gave you. The guide notes that national bathhouse rules require clothing in a mixed sauna room. Your own clothes usually stay in the locker until you leave.
The desk usually hands you one or two small towels. They are for drying off and for sitting on, and are not meant to be wrapped around you in the bath area. Some places have extra towels near the showers, and at some places extra towels are charged to your key.
