Will staff speak English?

Often it depends on the person in front of you, not on the business. Our guide Will they speak English, and what to do when they do not says front desks at large bathhouses, chain gyms and hotels may manage the basics. Small neighborhood places may manage little beyond a number and a nod, and that is fine for a transaction that is mostly pointing.

Salons and head spas are where it matters, because the service depends on a conversation. There, English may live with one particular designer rather than with the shop. So the useful question is whether the person you are booking with speaks English.

In our listings, English is confirmed at 7 places and confirmed as not available at 3, out of 1,615 places. For 1,605 places it is not confirmed yet. Not confirmed does not mean no. It means we have not recorded an answer.

What can I show at the counter?

Start with a hello and a thank you in Korean, then show the phrase, then point. Fewer English words for staff to produce makes the exchange easier for both of you.

For everything else, a translation app with camera input covers signs, menus and posted hours. Many visitors use one. In a government study, the domestic translation app was the most used among foreign visitors. Speech translation helps with short exchanges and can struggle in noisy rooms. Photos beat sentences for anything visual.

How we counted

We counted all 1,615 places in the SeoulSearch bundle. That covers bathhouses, head spas, massage, gyms and restaurants, in all Seoul areas in the bundle. This post lists no individual places, only counts. The places and facts come from Naver Place listings and owner confirmations, plus SeoulSearch guide cards. "Confirmed" means a fact is recorded for that place. "Not confirmed yet" means we have no record. The data is from 2026-09-28.
